Obituary of Harriet Morris

Harriet Ashcraft Morris Mrs. Morris, 81, passed away Monday, June 22nd, 2009 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Born August 2, 1927, in Charlotte, North Carolina, she was the last surviving child of Mr. and Mrs. H.G. Ashcraft. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Ben C. Ashcraft, Joseph H. Ashcraft, Hugh G. Ashcraft Jr., and her sister, Sara C. Ashcraft. Mrs. Morris was raised on her family?s dairy farm, Ashcraft Dairy. When the dairy was sold to Foremost Dairy in the 1950s, the land was subdivided into a neighborhood called Ashbrook where she and her family lived the remainder of her life. She attended Central High School in Charlotte and Meredith College in Raleigh, where she served for many years as permanent class president of the Class of 1949. She married Samuel R. (Ted) Morris, Jr. in June of 1949 and moved into the home they shared for sixty years. While raising their two loving children she was a full time substitute teacher for the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System. After that, she was the nutritionist and kitchen manager for Park Road Baptist Church Child Development Center for over twenty years. She was a charter member of Park Road Baptist Church and spent many years actively involved in the chapel choir, the annual Tableau, and teaching Sunday school. Every summer for the past 34 years, Harriet and Ted enjoyed their other home on Oak Island, NC. Together they remained active with the Charlotte chapter of the Eastern Airline?s retirees. Mrs. Morris is survived by her husband, Ted Morris; daughter, Ann Morris Hogshead and spouse, James B. Hogshead; son, Theodore R. Morris; grandchildren, James R. Allison, III and spouse, Julie H. Allison, Jessica Allison Merchant and spouse, Nathan J. Merchant, and Carrie Ann Baxter Hogshead; great grandchildren, Elijah James, Ava Elizabeth, and Iris Maeve Merchant. Mrs. Morris was also loved and supported by many nieces and nephews. There will be a private burial in Elmwood Cemetery. A celebration of her life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, June 25, 2009 at Park Road Baptist Church. The family will receive friends following the service.
