I first met Pete about 25 years ago…we were the single tag-along aunt and uncle at family gatherings of the Zeiler and Mullins clans for years. Pete’s sharp wit, passion, and encyclopedic knowledge on seemingly every topic made him a welcome addition to any gathering! I will forever remember him as the favourite, fun-loving uncle and as Dave’s best friend and younger bro “Spanky”. We were both fortunate to meet the loves of our lives later in life. Following Pete and Bhavna’s spectacular love story and his joy as a Dad to Lylah was heartwarming. Sending my deepest condolences to all those who loved him. May his big heart inspire all of us whose lives he touched.

Peter had already graduated from High school when I met him— he had come back to visit Barb Masters’ Approaching the Arts class that I was currently taking at the time. That class remains one of the most personally challenging experiences I—and perhaps any of us that took it— ever had, and it gave a certain intellectual gleam to those associated with it. Peter was particularly shiny— Puckish, long-haired, funny, irreverent…He was so cool!!!! A few years later, I was delighted to run into him, and thrilled to be asked on a date. We were both impoverished college students, so the fun we shared often involved making something out of nothing. He once called and told me I simply had to drive down Hines Drive immediately as there was something amazing to see— it was this same time of year, and the first tree had changed color and was blazing away. What a gift! Every year around his birthday I still think of him over the moon about “Big, red sugar maples!!!” We found a turntable and a sofa by the roadside, and tied them to the roof of his Tempo with with my bootlaces to get them home. We washed our hair in the rain. We read Tom Robbins and Dylan Thomas. We went dancing. We stayed in and made spaghetti. No matter what, it was always a good time hanging out with him. Pete was on fire about things all of the time— music, film, books, handbag design— you name it. Strikingly, he was on fire about helping people— one time during a pretty heavy snowfall, cars were all struggling to get up a hill— Peter got out of his car to jump on the back of a pickup to give it enough weight to make it up the icy slope. It was simply the right thing to do, and so that’s what he did. He was a fantastic guy, and I was lucky to share those youthful days with him. I am reminded now of so many things about Peter. The little chip in his tooth. The blue of his eyes. His turn of phrase. I’ll always love Peter. I’m so glad that he got to enjoy a fruitful career, that he got to be married to someone wonderful, and that he got to be a daddy. My heart overflows with joy for his life and grief for all of Peter’s family and friends who share in missing him now and always.

Words cannot express how big a loss Pete’s passing is for everyone who’s life he touched, and we are many. He never met a stranger and was always up for any adventure. Not only that, he could speak on any topic and was a true social justice warrior. I knew him in high school and then reconnected when he moved to Charlotte. My (now husband) Dean and I would frequent his Friday get togethers, and we stayed in touch even after moving to Atlanta. But when he came to Atlanta, he’d always call to get together and catch up. It was just perfect when Pete agreed to be the officiant at our wedding. He had just met Bhavna so they both came and I’m happy to say my photographer probably captured the most perfect Pete dance move that night! Pete, I’m so sad you’re gone too, too soon, but I just know you’re in the stars dancing “underneath the strobe light”. My deep condolences go out to his family and many loved ones. -Jennifer

Peter, you were an inspirational leader and a good friend. Your sense of fairness was unmatched; always seeking and seeing the best for and in people. Oh, and your sense of humor was a light that illuminated a room and put smiles on people’s faces. Your presence is still with us, because every time I enter the office, I hear your voice saying to me … “Fred, my man”. My rose garden which I burned your ears with all the time, reminds me of you smiling every time I brag about it. Yes, you have left us, but you are still living in our hearts and minds. As we say in Ghana … “Da yie” (Sleep well).
