Obituary of Marilyn Patricia Meacham Price

Marilyn Patricia Meacham Price, 91, of Fort Mill SC, passed away Monday, October 3, 2022. Born November 17, 1930, Marilyn was a true Charlottean. She was the daughter of the late Charles Rayford Meacham Sr and Doris Zoella Wooten Meacham. In her early years she attended Woodlawn Elementary School, graduated from Sharon High School and also attended Mitchell College. Marilyn was a teacher, historian, artist, preservationist, and musician and spent much of her adult life teaching and sharing traditional Carolina folkways. She learned the ancient crafts of the Appalachians and for years taught pottery, weaving, chair caning, splint and rush weaving, and other arts of by gone days. Although her formal training was in classical piano, she fell in love with fiddle tunes when she met her future husband, Jim, at a square dance at Woodlawn Elementary School. She decided to learn the guitar and other stringed instruments and was off and running, playing with different bands over the years, competing at festivals, and soaking up her Carolina heritage. In 1982 she founded The Charlotte Folk Music Society, now celebrating their 40th year. She also taught guitar lessons at CPCC and hosted The Sunday Night Jam Class for 14 years. Marilyn has produced and performed in traditional music segments for The Charlotte Summer Pops, The Singing Christmas Tree, CPCC Summer Theatre, museums, area historic sites, and numerous schools where she taught children the folklore and music of the old days. In 1997, Marilyn was presented The Heritage Award by the Charlotte Folk Music Society, and in 2002, at the Carolinas Legends Festival, the Lancaster County SC Council of the Arts, presented her with the first Homer “Pappy” Sherrill Outstanding Achievement Award for her many contributions to folk music. The Charlotte Folk Society has established a scholarship in her honor that sends a promising young musician to attend Old Time week at The Swannanoa Gathering at Warren Wilson College in Asheville each year. In their retirement, Jim and Marilyn enjoyed traveling, not only in the United States, but overseas. Marilyn lived a full and amazing life and is survived by her loving children, her son Charles Price, and daughter Pamela Price Garcia, and her husband Rick. Also grandchildren James Price, Paul Fenner, Chris Dalton, Kelly Lee, and several great grandchildren. Also brothers Charles Meacham, Rick Meacham and his wife Sandra, and sister in law, Jean Meacham and brother in law, Wayne Johnson and many more loving nieces, nephews, family, and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Jim Price, and sister, Nancy Johnson. A graveside service will be held at 11:00am Monday, October 10, 2022 at the Old Steele Creek Cemetery, 7001 Steele Creek Road Charlotte, NC 28217 with a reception to follow at Steele Creek Presbyterian at Pleasant Hill, 15000 York Road Charlotte, NC 28278. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Marilyn Meacham Price Scholarship in care of The Charlotte Folk Society PO Box 36864 Charlotte NC 28236-6864, that sends a young musician for a week of music camp at the Swannanoa Gathering at Warren Wilson College.
