Obituary of Virginia Ann Mathews

Virginia (Ginny) Ann Bott Mathews, 78, of Charlotte, passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord during the early morning hours on Saturday April 24, 2021. Born September 12, 1942 in Waukegan, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Wendel Bott and Theresa Rose Rauth Bott.

After graduating from High School she moved with her family to Albuquerque, New Mexico. She obtained her RN degree from the University of Albuquerque and completed her BS degree from the College of St. Francis. She then worked in the Intensive and coronary Intensive units in several hospitals in Albuquerque. Ginny then worked at a US Military Hospital in Germany. On return to Albuquerque she again worked in the Intensive Care Unit at the Lovelace Medical Center. It was there she met her future husband, Dr. Emmett C. Mathews, Jr. They were married in June, 1987.

Following their marriage she moved with her husband to Charlotte, NC. She accepted a position in Intensive Care at Presbyterian Hospital where she worked until her health forced her retirement from nursing twenty years ago.

After retirement, Ginny continued to have a strong interest in gardening and became interested in the art from with flowers: Ikebana Japanese Flower Arrangements. Se became active in the local Ikebana Club and achieved a Third Degree Master Level Teacher. For several years she taught other students this art form. Finally her health forced her to stop this activity.

Ginny is survived by her husband of 33 years, Dr. Emmett C. Mathews, Jr.; step-son, Richard Hunt Mathews, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; step-daughter, Dr. Susan Slate Mathews-Duvall, of Roanoke, Virginia. She is also survived by her sister, Kathleen Marie Bott Edds, of Omaha, Nebraska; and two nephews: Michael D. Vigil and Kevin A. Vigil, both of Omaha, Nebraska; along with a total of six grandchildren whom she loved dearly.
