Anna Poyner

Obituary of Anna Sposito Poyner

On March 30, 2021, Anna S. Poyner, mother of two, grandmother of five, and great-grandmother of two, passed away peacefully at the age of 91.

Anna was born on January 29, 1930 in Syracuse, NY, the only child to Carmen and Rafaella Sposito.  On June 10, 1950 she married James Poyner.  They raised two daughters, Janice (Ron) Weiner and Donna (Michael) Miller.

Anna had a passion for art and was a skilled painter; her works hang in the homes of her children and grandchildren.  She enjoyed cooking classes as well. In 1972, when she and James lived in Paris, she explored museums and took tours of artist’s studios every chance she could.  Upon returning to the USA in 1974, Anna loved living in Manhattan (NYC) - she spent time with friends, went to museums, went to Broadway productions and toured many sections of Manhattan.  She was always active and inquisitive.  Anna and James moved to Pinehurst, North Carolina in 1980.  Anna enjoyed exercising, golfing, traveling and exploring new places, even taking international trips with her grandchildren.  Despite never learning to swim she always took her grandchildren to the beach and spent as much time as she could with them.  Anna also enjoyed volunteering as a poll worker for many years, served as a eucharistic minister at her church in Pinehurst, and volunteered for Hospice.  She was delighted to have become a member of the Silver Foils in Pinehurst and volunteered at golf tournaments regularly.  She loved dancing, especially to Frank Sinatra music, and guests at her grandson’s wedding remember her as the life of the party.  Anna moved to Charlotte to be closer to family in October 2015 and loved living at The Cypress.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband, James.  She is survived by her daughters, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren.  We are gratified by the warmth and caring of the staff at Brookdale South Park and the Hospice staff who grew to love Anna.

Donations may be sent in Anna’s memory to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region at 7845 Little Ave.,Charlotte, NC 28226.
