Joe Vogt

Obituary of Joe Vogt

Joe Robert Vogt, 75, of Charlotte, NC passed away peacefully from complications due to Covid-19 Wednesday, January 27, 2021 with his devoted wife by his side.

Joe was born on September 5, 1945 in Atlanta, GA to Frank Marcel and Sophia Baron Vogt. After graduation from West Mecklenburg High School, he married his high school sweetheart, Amanda “Diane” Presson, on October 31, 1964. Together they reared 3 daughters, Wendy, Debbie, and Amanda. Joe spent the majority of his working career in construction, which afforded him the ability to travel all over the United States. He did iron work in his younger years, overcoming a fear of heights to help build skyscrapers in uptown Charlotte at a time when safety harnesses were not required. Later in his career Joe was a Tower Crane Operator and came out of retirement multiple times to help out various crews. He took such pride in his profession.

Joe lived life to the fullest. When he set his mind to do something, he was all in. Riding his Harley was one of his most favorite pastimes. He lived for the rides he had with his brothers of the Mechanized Calvary and was proud to be on the cannon crew. Joe had a passion for military history, his Southern heritage, and books, with an amazing recall of specific wars, battles, generals, and dates. He was a master of many different hobbies throughout his life, including beekeeping, but playing bluegrass music on his collection of instruments remained a constant. Joe was genuine, fiercely loyal, opinionated, witty, resilient, brave, generous, loving, stubborn, and so very funny. His laugh was contagious and there was no limit to what he would do to get one in return. Joe reveled in being a Paw-Paw and his grandchildren adored him. With a mischievous glint in his eye, he did his best to bring out the troublemaker in every one of them, all while sitting back and giggling to himself. Joe was loved by so many and our loss is profound.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his nephew, Tony Braswell, brother-in-law, Steven Edwards, and brother-in-law, Rickey Newsom. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Diane Presson Vogt; daughters, Wendy Vogt Weesner (Kerry), Deborah Stevens Nielsen (Chris), Amanda Vogt Tyson (Jeff); grandchildren, Sadie and Benjamin Stevens, and Ariel, Garrett, and Evie Tyson; brother, Frank Marcel Vogt, Jr. (Gwen); twin sister Jean Vogt Cenicola (Matt), and sister Elizabeth “Libby” Vogt Edwards; and many more loving family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date, to which all will be invited.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Hospital for Children.
