Fay was the charge nurse on11pm-7am shift on First Saint Mary's at Mercy Hospital when I first went there to work. Later, we would both work in Coronary Care until she went to Medical Intensive.
Fay was my friend for years. She shared her kindness and wisdom with me which helped me so much. She had a great sense of humor and had these little sayings that helped us all get through the trials and stress of working in a highly intensive department. But that charming Southern demeanor could take you back when she had had enough impudence or her patients were put in jeopardy. She stood her ground when a patient was put in peril, and it didn't matter if it was another nurse or someone in administration. She could be a tiger when the need arose and I had nothing but respect for her.
She loved her sons. It was evident in the way she talked about them.
She was in good health the last time I visited her in 2012. I wish I had known she was so ill; I would have been more diligent about visiting her.
I will never forget Fay.
My sincerest condolences to her family. I know they will miss her terribly.
