Obituary of William Preston Wilkes, Jr.

William Preston "Bill" Wilkes, Jr. 79, of Charlotte, passed away Wednesday, December 9, 2020. A native of Charlotte, he was born Saturday, September 20, 1941 to the late William, Sr. and Nan McKinney Wilkes. Bill graduated from Wingate University and went on to study at University of North Carolina before serving his country in the U.S. Air Force. Upon being Honorably Discharged he attended Pfeiffer University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. He grew up playing drums in small bands throughout his life. Bill was an Eagle Scout and worked for the Boy Scouts of America as well as the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed playing golf, listening to beach music, shag dancing, fishing at the Outer Banks, barbecuing and spending time entertaining family and friends.

Bill is survived by his loving son, Shawn Wilkes and his fiance Nina Bost; and sister, Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Wilkes.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at Forest Lawn West Cemetery, Charlotte, NC with Pastor Jeff Sockwell officiating.
