Beatrice Butt

Obituary of Beatrice Winifred Butt

Beatrice “Trix” Winifred Butt, 93, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away Monday, June 29, 2020. Born Friday, January 21, 1927, in Nottingham, England, she was the daughter of the late Frederick John and Nellie May Rice Hawker.

Trix’s professional career as a nurse began in England, and continued in Canada, where she eventually retired as a head nurse. Trix and her late husband, Fred, moved to Charlotte, and she worked at the Planning Commission and at Central Piedmont Community College.

Trix was a strong minded and independent woman with high intellect. Under that dignified, proud and elegant façade, she was funny with an incredible sense of humor. Trix and her late husband Fred were avid campers. She loved reading books and she would complete them so quickly which resulted in getting her a library card.

Trix was also a nature lover. She not only enjoyed bird watching, she would feed them and knew all the names of species and their behavioral patterns. She had a deep knowledge and interest in railroad as her father and brother worked in this field. Her compassion is conspicuous as she adopted many rescue dogs over the years.

Trix had several hobbies including playing scrabble, Bingo, doing puzzles, and starting clubs like “C.L.A.M.S.” to encourage people to tell their life stories. She wrote a book called “Memories of WWII-Era England” which is about her personal memories as a young girl during the war.

Trix was a mother to few and a friend to many. She lived a life filled with enthusiasm, dignity and plenty of love.

Trix is survived by her son, Dr. Martyn Hawkins; Goddaughter, Dr. Maha Gingrich; Son-in-law, Scott Gingrich; Granddaughter, Pavani Gingrich; Nieces, Susan Marshall, Patricia Wiltshire and Sheila Brickel. Great Nieces and Nephews; Lisa Marshall; Kirsten and Cara Wiltshire; Paul and Neil Brickel. Friends, Dss. Tina Jenkins; Geraldine Alexander; and many more loving family and friends.

In addition to her parents, Beatrice was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick William Butt.

A memorial will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, July 3, 2020 at St. Michael's Anglican Church, 2211 Margaret Wallace Road, Matthews, NC 28105. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in St. Michael's Cemetery.
