Obituary of Charlene Hale

On Sunday, March 22, 2020 at 6:00 pm, Charlene Ashford Hale, age 66 of Detroit, Michigan died at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC.

Charlene was always a fighter, but Jesus Christ was on her side, battling serious health conditions: a massive stroke, four blood transfusions and a massive heart attack that took her life. For over a decade, Charlene, lived in a senior nursing facility, Citadel at Myers Park. The staff at Citadel at Myers Park and her faithful loving nurse, Flesia Powell, made sure Charlene was well taken care of until her last breath.

Charlene was a secretary at the historic Westin Book Cadillac Hotel (built in1924) in Detroit, Michigan. She enjoyed typing, reading books and magazines. She loved cooking for her family.

It is no secret that Charlene loved attention and words of affirmation. She also loved to receive gifts of all kinds. She loved to sit out on the porch and people watch with her sunglasses on. Several years ago, the whole family came to Charlotte to visit Charlene for the family reunion and she was on cloud nine for days. If you asked her “How she was doing?” her response would be “simply marvelous”.

Charlene was born to (the late) Charles David Hale and (the late) Frazell Martin Hale on Monday, August 3, 1953 in Detroit, Michigan. She married (the late) Marshall Franklin Ashford in 1973 and they lived together in Detroit, Michigan. Together they had three lovely children.

She leaves as her legacy seven children: Tamekia Ashford Nixon, Marquise Ashford, Chalanda Frazier (Nkito), Davie James Pruitt, father of: Shariah Ashford, Somone Ashford, Montez Ashford and Sonjanae Ashford (raised by Linda Hale). She also leaves to cherish her memory five siblings: Theresa Williams, Michael Hale (Yvette), Linda Hale, Alex Hale, Michelle Lee (Michael).

She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews and two grandsons, extended family and a host of friends, we love you all.

A Burial Service is to be held on April 2, 2020, 2:00 pm at Oaklawn Cemetery, 1615 Oaklawn Ave. Charlotte, NC 28216. Pastor Ted White will officiate the ceremony. A reception will follow at Huntersville Presbyterian Church 201 S. Old Statesville Rd, Huntersville NC 28078.

Charlene's Favorite Poem:

"Mother to Son"

BY LANGSTON HUGHES

Well, son, I’ll tell you:

Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.

It’s had tacks in it,

And splinters,

And boards torn up,

And places with no carpet on the floor—

Bare.

But all the time

I’se been a-climbin’ on,

And reachin’ landin’s,

And turnin’ corners,

And sometimes goin’ in the dark

Where there ain’t been no light.

So boy, don’t you turn back.

Don’t you set down on the steps

’Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.

Don’t you fall now—

For I’se still goin’, honey,

I’se still climbin’,

And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
