Obituary of Joseph McLaney Jr.
Joseph W. McLaney, Jr., age 90, of Charlotte passed away Saturday, October 20, 2018. He was born in Charlotte to the late Joseph W. McLaney, Sr. and Margaret Brown McLaney.
He was a 6th generation member of First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. He attended Charlotte City schools and graduated from Charlotte Central High School and received his Bachelor’s degree from Davidson College. He went on to attend Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Va.
His primary business career was in wholesale lumber and construction.
Joseph was a talented baritone singer and was a soloist with the Oratorio singers. He was a member of church choirs for many years and composed church music.
Joseph had a lively sense of humor and quick wit. His interests involved gardening, fishing, sailing and photography in younger days.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Rev. John Ardrey McLaney and daughter, Sara Elizabeth McLaney.
He is survived by his wife Jane Anderson McLaney; sons, Joseph Wheeler McLaney III and Ernest Thornton McLaney; daughters, Margaret Louise McLaney and Mary Catherine Snyder; grandchildren, Melissa Manning McLaney and Christopher Scott McLaney, Lillianna DeAnn McLaney-Cox, Joseph Wheeler McLaney IV, Sarah Nicole Snyder, and Joshua Alexander Snyder; sister, Mary Mohr; sister-in-law, Beverly Tissot McLaney.
A Memorial Service will be 11:00 AM Friday, October 26, 2018 in the chapel at First Presbyterian Church, 200 W. Trade St., Charlotte, NC 28202.
