Obituary of Ted Alexander Whisenant

Ted Alexander Whisenant (Alex) died in an accident on October 13, 2018. Alex died doing something selflessly for someone whom he loves immeasurably.

Born September 21, 1964 Alex graduated in 1983 from Charlotte Country Day School and received a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1987 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

As the family gathered to contribute to this obituary, adjectives flowed onto the page: brave, loyal, loving, kind, compassionate, focused (a euphemism for impatient), selfless, fearless, effortlessly charming, generous, warm, optimistic, and absolutely authentic. Alex taught us how to love better, to dig deeper, and to live a truer life.

Alex had many activities and interests, but sports and music were his favorites. His athleticism brought him and his family great joy. We can still see the delight on his face when we remember some of the highlights: senior year of high school home run over the fence at Crockett Park, football captain and state championships, getting to play basketball with Michael Jordan at UNC, and the Northstone golf championship. Alex loved to run barefoot, especially at Davidson and Dewees. Alex shared with his family a great love of music, in particular every live version he could find on YouTube of his core favorite songs.

Alex’s deep faith is an important legacy he shares with his beloved children Alexander James (AJ) Whisenant and Mary Grace Whisenant, whom he loves more than anything. He will continue to inspire them, as he will his parents Jim and Paulette Beatty and Bill Whisenant, and his siblings Natalie Whisenant, Tully Beatty, and Kaki Riley. His nieces Zoe and Menty Conner and nephews Oz Conner, Jack and Ford Morrow,  and Jackie Beatty, shared a close relationship with him, and Alex’s contribution to their lives will nourish their relationships with AJ and Mary Grace. His beloved Suzanne Patrick, and her children Patrick, Andrew, Jacob and Rachel Stankiewicz, will always feel the warmth of Alex’s love, for there is a permanent place for them in Alex’s giant heart.
