Obituary of Dorothy Mingus Cato

Dorothy Mingus Cato, age 100, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2018.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Garland Jacob Mingus and Della Mae Glover Mingus, brothers Garland, Jr. and Earl, sisters Mary Della and Betty, and her husband, Howard Cato.  She is survived by her sister, Mildred Lawing; her two children, Bill Cato and Lynn (Tom) Spada; four grandchildren:  Josh (Meredith) Cato, Darby (Dave) McClatchy, Corynne (Bob) Arnett and Abby (Mike) Dogum; nine great-grandchildren:  Olivia, Amelia, Brynn, Riley, Benjamin, Claire, Laila, Audrey, and Jude; and a large family of nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was honored to be a member of the National Honor Society and Valedictorian of the 1935 Class of graduates at Paw Creek High School.  Her first job was in the Office of Price Administration in the courthouse on West Trade St. She had several long-term secretarial jobs in Charlotte businesses until retirement.

A life-long Baptist, she enjoyed teaching a women’s Sunday School Class until she was 82.  She had a heart for Missions and was generous in her giving to people in need.

Her grandchildren remember her as pure and simple “love” and the great-grandchildren have delighted in caring for her every need.  In turn, she loved all of their visits, cards, pictures, and “sugar”.  She had a sweet and blessed life and was herself, a gift and an example.  “The Lord is My Shepherd. I Have Everything I Need”. Rest in peace, dear one, until we meet again.
