Obituary of Ralph Sidney Underwood

Ralph Sidney Underwood, Jr, 94, passed away October 13, 2018. He was born December 9, 1923 in Mecklenburg County, the son of the late Ralph Sidney Underwood Sr., and Reamer Neal Underwood.

He was preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and wife of 72 years, Harriet Campbell Underwood. Inseparable during life, from grocery shopping, doctor’s appointments and family events, the two passed away within one week of each other. Ralph was a member of Paw Creek Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon. He also attended University City United Methodist Church during his later years. He was a graduate of Paw Creek High School and a World War II Navy veteran. During the war he served in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific. He retired from Robinson Electric in 1986.

Ralph is survived by sons Sid Underwood and wife Linda of Blacksburg, VA, Andy Underwood of Anchorage, AK;  daughter,  Karen Gamble and husband Charles of Raleigh, NC; three granddaughters, who he loved very much, Lauren Gamble Woodruff and husband Quinn, Katie Gamble and Claire Underwood. He is also survived by Sister Betty Berg and husband Bob of Brevard, NC. In addition to his wife and parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his sisters Mildred Davis, Doris Groover, and Laura Coggins.

A memorial service will be held at Paw Creek Presbyterian Church on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 12:00 PM. Visitation will take place at the Church Fellowship Center immediately following the service.
