Obituary of Fred L. Kiser

Fred Kiser, 97, of Charlotte, died peacefully on April 14, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.  Born February 13, 1921, in Gaston County, NC, he was the son of the late Ransom G. and Ida J. Kiser, the loving and devoted husband of Betty H. Kiser and the father of Melinda Kiser Beardsworth.

A graduate of Kings Point Military Academy, a Coast Guard school, Fred was commissioned in the Navy and attained the rank of Lieutenant in the active Naval Reserve.  A member of what has been labeled the “Greatest Generation”, he served his country during WWII as an officer in the Merchant Marines, traveling to 27 seaport towns and spending 28 days in the Odessa and Black Sea regions of the Soviet Union.

After WWII, Fred returned to North Carolina where he met and married Betty.  They subsequently moved to Charlotte where Fred built the house they would call home for the next 70 years.  The Kisers joined Purcell United Methodist Church and remain faithful and active members.  Fred was employed by Duke Power for 38 years, serving in a variety of positions from appliance repairs, line construction, cable splicing, substation maintenance and underground maintenance.  In 1974, he was promoted to supervisor in the operations and maintenance department where he remained until his retirement.

Fred was preceded in death by his son Tom Kiser, his parents Ransom and Ida Kiser, five of his seven brothers and his two sisters.  He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife Betty, his daughter Melinda and husband Terry Beardsworth, his daughter in law Linda Kiser and four grandchildren:  Ashley and husband George Patronis, Wesley and wife Giselle Beardsworth, Josh and wife Brandy Kiser, and Jonathan and wife Heidi Kiser.  Fred also leaves behind two brothers, J B Kiser and wife Mary Lou and Hugh Kiser and wife Marlene, two sisters-in-law, Glenda Heavner and Pat Heavner, ten great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.  A gentleman and fun-loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and brother, Fred will be deeply missed here on Earth but is reunited with family and friends in Heaven.  What a joyous reunion that was!

A service to celebrate the life of Fred Kiser will be held at Purcell United Methodist Church, 2141 Weyland Avenue, Charlotte, NC  28208, on Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at 3:00 pm.  The Rev. Gerald Ramsey will officiate.  The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 2:00-3:00 pm, at the church.

Memorials may be made to the Charlotte Rescue Mission, 907 W. 1st Street, Charlotte, NC  28202, or to Hospice & Palliative Care of Charlotte, 7845 Little Avenue, Charlotte , NC  28226.   The family wishes to express sincere thanks to the faithful and loving nurses and staff at the Levine and Dickson Hospice House at Southminster for the wonderful care they provided to Fred and his family.
