Obituary of Thomas Peacock

Thomas Peacock, 97, passed away April 3, 2018.  Tom was preceded in death just last August by his wife of 75 years, Marie Peacock.   He is survived by his children, Anne Warner (Tom) of Saint Louis, MO, Rob Peacock (Sarah) of Charlotte, NC, and Pam Griffin (Ralph) of Dunwoody, GA, as well as by his grandchildren, Dr. Calvin Warner (Sarah), Andrew Warner, Elizabeth Peacock and Annie Peacock.  In addition, he is survived by his sisters, Roberta Gamble and Shirley Dowling, his sisters-in-law, Jean Lovell and Jackie Pruitt, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  Born August 21, 1920 in Atlanta, Ga, Tom grew up in Lakeland, FL where he met and married Marie.  In World War II, Tom served in the Army Air Corps as a B-17 pilot.  After the war, Tom went into business and it was a job that brought Tom and Marie to North Carolina in 1948.  Tom worked in leasing for most of his business career ultimately starting a company with two partners which is now BB&T Leasing.  Tom retired in 1987 and began to write.  What started as a desire to write about growing up during the Depression for his grandchildren led to taking seminars on writing, becoming a panel member of those same seminars, two small books, and teaching an annual writing course at Plantation Estates.  It also left his family and friends with a wealth of wonderful pieces about his life.  Tom was a member of St. John’s Baptist Church for 70 years, read voraciously, loved playing and watching golf, and delighting in Tar Heel basketball.  Tom was a man who deeply loved his family and friends and was loved in return.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 14, 2018 in the auditorium at Plantation Estates, 701 Plantation Estates Drive, Matthews, NC.  A reception in the Plantation Estates Atrium will be held immediately after the service.    In lieu of flowers memorials can be sent to St. John’s Baptist Church, 300 Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte NC, the Samaritans Fund at Plantation Estates, Matthews NC, or to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave, Montgomery AL.
