Obituary of William Alfred McCulloch

Mr. McCulloch of Charlotte, NC, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at Presbyterian Hospital, Matthews, NC after a brief illness. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA on December 29, 1921, son of the late William Gladstone McCulloch and the late Lenore Talbot McCulloch. Alfred grew up in Charlotte and attended Dilworth School, Alexander Graham Junior High School and graduated from Central High School in 1940. He spent a number of his summers working with his grandfather, Alfred Talbot, who was a newspaper publisher and printer in London, Ontario. World War II interrupted his secondary education and he joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942. He served in the Pacific Theatre and participated in the invasions of Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. While in combat on Iwo Jima, he saw the flag go up on Mount Surabachi. After the war, he married his childhood sweetheart, Dorothy L. Upton of Charlotte. Alfred continued his education at Catawba College and Davidson College and then majored in Printing Management and Engineering at Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh. After working for several commercial printing firms in Charlotte, he partnered with George Morgan and Harold Villas and founded Craftsman Printing Company. Alfred served as President of the Printing Industry of the Carolinas in 1977. In January of 2006, Mr. McCulloch was honored by The Printing Industry of America with induction into "The Ben Franklin Society," an international fraternity of printers "who have contributed much to their industry and community." Also an active member of the Charlotte Uptown Rotary Club for twenty-five years, he was recognized as a "Paul Harris Fellow." His Christian ministry associations however were his most valued connections. He was a long term member of Garr Memorial Church where he served as the first chairman of the board of trustees. In his final years he served as an elder at Providence Community Church located at the Carriage Club of Charlotte. Camp Lurecrest at Lake Lure, NC, committed to impacting children with the gospel of Jesus Christ, was also an important affiliation throughout his life. He was instrumental in its formation as an independent ministry, served on its board for several years and supported its work until the last day of his life. Alfred was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ from an early age and lived a life of obedience and prayer, enjoying the grace he experienced provided by the Lord's finished, atoning work at the cross. He is survived by his son, Al McCulloch and his wife Kathy of Minnesott Beach, NC; son, Richard McCulloch and his wife Joan of Charlotte, NC; daughter Lynne Booth and her husband Chip of Charlotte, NC; granddaughter Adrienne Bartle and her husband Max of Panama City, FL; granddaughter Laura Romans and her husband Craig of Panama City, FL; grandson Ryan McCulloch and his wife Danielle of Spokane, WA; granddaughter Tyler Carpenter and her husband Matt of Charlotte, NC; grandson Craig Freel and his wife Perri of Charlotte and seven great grandchildren.
