Obituary of Gwendolyn McCormick Abramson

Gwendolyn McCormick Abramson, 98, of Charlotte, NC, passed away at her home on Thursday, November 30, 2017. Gwen was born March 31, 1919, in Raphine, Virginia, the daughter of Erma Rosen McCormick and Edna Houff McCormick. Gwen graduated from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She worked as one of the first women chemists for DuPont and Celanese where she met her beloved husband, Chester Carl Abramson. They were married for 59 years and spent 30 of those living on Vilano Beach in St. Augustine, Florida. Gwen was an avid reader, loved nature, the beach and dreamed of being a marine biologist. She possessed a flare for fashion, loved quilting and served as a docent providing tours for the historic Memorial Presbyterian Church in St. Augustine. She was at the heart of our family, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, providing unconditional love, guidance, strength and an immeasurable passion for life. Gwen was predeceased by her husband, Chester Carl Abramson, her parents and sister, Edna Jane McCormick. She is survived by her three children, Carl McCormick Abramson and his wife Kathleen McRae Abramson from Irvine, CA; Judyellen Abramson Gauthier of Charlotte, NC; and David Chester Abramson and his fiancée Patricia Critz of Tega Cay, SC.; one granddaughter, Jaime Gwen Bettencourt and her husband Griffin Megeath Bettencourt; and two great grandsons, Cohen Megeath Bettencourt and Hudson McCormick Bettencourt. The memorial service will be held in St. Augustine, Florida on a commemorative date.
