Obituary of George Laycock Short

George Laycock Short, age 72, of Charlotte, NC a lifelong Charlottean, passed away suddenly on March 7, 2018 at his late residence. George was born on Saturday, August 11, 1945 in Charlotte, NC to the late Charles M. Short and the late Mary Louise Laycock Short. George served his country as a Corporal in the US Marines during the Vietnam War. Afterwards he was a salesperson for Electrical Supplies in Charlotte, NC. George is survived by his beloved wife Joyce Fisher Short of 35 years. They met in 1965 and then reconnected in the 1980's. George is also survived by his sister Mary Sue "Molly" Sparger and her husband James "Jim" Sparger of Jupiter, Florida, and their children Kelley Burns and her husband Vince, of Juno Beach, Florida, Shannon Sparger of Jupiter, Florida and Todd Sparger and his wife Kim of Port Orange, Florida; He is also survived by his step-daughter Robin Russell of Charlotte, NC. In addition to his late parents, George was preceded in death by his brother Charles "Shorty" M. Short who died in 2004. George graduated from Myers Park High School in 1963 where he enjoyed playing baseball. He then attended Wingate College, now Wingate University just before he entered the Marine Corps. George was a very big sports fan especially basketball with a favoring for Duke . He was a very huge LA Dodger's baseball fan, attending many games years ago with his beloved Joyce. Although he did not play golf he enjoyed watching golf on television, especially Tiger Woods. George was a true nature lover who had a soft spot for cats. He was owned by several cats over his lifetime, with his favorite and most recent being Chiswell. As his health began to decline, George was the recipient of some of the most wonderful medical care available. His family would like to thank Dr. Larry Berman and his entire staff for the marvelous care and love they gave to George. This made the last few months more meaningful. Even though George was a true homebody at heart, he did enjoy traveling with Joyce to Florida. Although Joyce was the queen of the kitchen, George was the king of the grille. Services and interment were private. Contributions in memory of George may be made to a charity of the donor's choice, or the Charlotte Humane Society 2700 Toomey Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28203
